The Better I Know You, the Better I Can Doctor You

When I first started practicing medicine, I thought being a “good doctor” meant staying up-to-date on clinical guidelines, documenting thoroughly, and moving efficiently through a packed schedule. I thought if I worked harder and learned more, I’d naturally become better at helping people.

And in some ways, that was true.

But what no one taught me in medical school — and what I only learned through experience — is that the real key to being a great doctor isn’t just knowledge. It’s connection.

In traditional fee-for-service healthcare, doctors are pressured to see 20–30 patients per day. There’s little time to sit down, ask meaningful questions, or understand the full context of a patient’s life. Appointments become rushed. Care becomes fragmented. And over time, both the doctor and the patient suffer.

When I transitioned into Direct Primary Care (DPC), everything changed.

I started seeing patients not just when they were sick, but when they were well. I learned about their families, their stressors, their habits, and their hopes. I started to remember their stories — not just their medications. And slowly, I began to understand something that’s now foundational to the way I practice:

The better I know you, the better I can doctor you.

Why Relationship-Based Medicine Works

In relationship-based medicine, your doctor doesn’t just react to problems — they help you prevent them. We make better decisions because we understand the full picture of your health, not just the symptoms in isolation.

It’s not just about checking your blood pressure or adjusting your labs — it’s about knowing your baseline, your patterns, and what matters most to you.

This is why personalized healthcare works so well in the DPC model. With fewer patients and longer visits, I’m able to:

  • Listen without rushing
  • Follow up personally
  • Notice the small shifts that often go undetected
  • Build long-term trust with every patient I serve

I Made a Video About This

If you want to hear more of my heart behind this kind of medicine, I recorded a short video on YouTube reflecting on why these relationships matter so deeply to me.
