MTHFR, Methylfolate, & Methyl B12 — What You Actually Need to Know
From Dr. Froese — because Google is chaotic and your body deserves better info.
You might’ve heard about something called the MTHFR gene — and maybe you even have a variation or mutation of any of the 4 copies. Don’t panic. It’s very common, and for most people, it just means your body isn’t converting folate (vitamin B9) into its active form as efficiently as it could be.
That’s where methylfolate comes in. It’s the already-activated form of folate your body actually uses. When you take it in this form, you’re skipping the broken step in the process if you have a mutation present.
But wait — why is everyone also talking about methylated B12?
Because folate and B12 work together in your body to support things like:
- Energy & mood regulation
- Fertility & pregnancy
- Detoxification & methylation
- DNA repair & cell function
If your methylation cycle is sluggish (like it often is with an MTHFR mutation), you’ll want methylcobalamin — the active form of B12 — so your body can actually use it right away.
Bottom line:
If you have MTHFR, or you’re dealing with fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, or trying to get pregnant — switching to methylated B vitamins is often a smart, low-risk move.

P.S. A great brand for Methylfolate/Methylcobalamin supplementation is Jarrow Formulas, but there are many!
